Take risks at the gym

in Advice by

I think we sometimes forget that our Jiu Jitsu academies are places of learning.  Meaning, it’s a place to experiment, take risks, and make mistakes.  This is where the instructor teaches and gives answers and a place to ask questions.  Not a place to count how many wins or losses. If you’re not sure where to start, here’s an optional plan. Work on a weakness. Yeah, figure out what you’re struggling with and see why it’s not working.  Maybe you need to ditch the technique or modify it to make it work for you.  Try changing your body position.  Try…

Baiting to Create Openings

in Advice by

Have you struggled to get to your favorite sweep or submission because your opponent is aware of what you want?  Most likely you have and this is where the game becomes like chess.  You have to start thinking of leading  your opponent to the place you want to be. For example, I can’t get the darce choke on command.  I usually get it in a “controlled” scrap.  What does a “controlled” scrap mean?  In this example of achieving the darce choke, I usually get it during a side control escape by my opponent.  I have top position and my opponent…

Jiu Jitsu Therapist

in News by

Found a helpful Youtube channel called The Jiu Jitsu Therapist. Actually, I discovered it a couple months ago.  However, I wanted to test the movements before promoting it.   With that said, so far so good. Is it helping my jiu jitsu game?  Not really sure but if I’m getting stronger, it must be helping somewhere. Anyways, here’s a link to the channel:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwUYfr1lIVYg7fBC1Slqitg Let me know if it works for you!

Understand Concepts To Improve Your Jiu Jitsu

in Advice by

This past month in our academy, I’ve been going over guard passing.  The class learned how to pass from spider guard, closed guard, butterfly guard, De La Riva guard, and so on.  However, there is one concept that has been consistent in all of these passes.  Get rid of your opponents legs. If you break it down to what is the core component for the guard player to keep you from passing, it’s the guard.  The legs are in the way!  All the techniques found in YouTube videos and from your instructor usually starts off with some sort of control…

Work On Striking To Get Better Jiu Jitsu?

in Advice by

I know this sounds weird, but wanted to share how training in boxing or Muay Thai can improve your game.  It improved mine! The reason I know it was kickboxing was because that was the only change.  There was no increase in mat time or weight training workout. After about 4 months of training kickboxing, I noticed my Jiu Jitsu game is stronger.  Cardio improved.  Strength improved.  Explosive movements were easier. Technique was sharper. I believe two important physical improvements resulted from kickboxing:  explosiveness and cardio. It’s kind of easy in Jiu-Jitsu to play slow or more methodical.  You can…
